I have just spent two days without wearing any makeup. None at all.

And we have had absolutely no schedule.

I even had two naps yesterday. Yes. Two naps.

Bliss. Total bliss.

My son has probably had too much screen time – but he has helped me with watering the gardens without any complaint and he hung out with me last night while I was blogging and watching TV, so I take that as a win.

Schedules are overrated. I didn’t have one at his age in the summer, other than swimming lessons. My mother just sent me outside to do something constructive if she was sick of seeing me in the house.

The older I get, the more I appreciate my summers in the 70s and early 80s. It seemed more laid back. Not as many worries about keeping kids busy, and making sure we eat the right things. Heck, my mom treated us to Twinkies when we went to vacation Bible school at church – no guilt involved.

I had a Pop Tart this morning for breakfast.

Just saying.

We had our fair share of screen time and even video games back in the day, but there didn’t seem to be any judgment involved. I’m so sick of Judgy McJudgy. I think I turned out pretty okay, yes?

My son chased me around with the garden hose today, hoping to spray me with some water. He’s 13 and I asked him, “That never gets old, does it?” And he replied with the biggest grin, “Nope, it doesn’t!”

That’s really what it’s all about. Enjoy the little life moments. Enjoy the laughter and the goofing around. Don’t worry so much.

I enjoyed those little moments today – and I didn’t even have my cell phone with me to capture a photo. And you know what? That might be the most liberating thing of all.

  1. Love this! I’m a child of the 70’s and 80’s and can relate–except for the Twinkies part. Mom didn’t let us have much sugar. I thought she was the meanest. I get it now. Thanks for sharing your insights. I enjoy reading them. They make me smile.

    • Thanks for reading and commenting, Tamara! 🙂 My mom would only buy Twinkies that week of vacation Bible school … I suppose it was good incentive for us not to complain that we had to go! LOL And my brother and I would always visit my grandparents’ home in town to “steal” Cokes from their fridge! 😉
