If you follow my blog with any regularity, then you know I’m part of Jennie-O Turkey Store’s “Switch Circle” of bloggers. No big surprise, I’m sure, since I have a passion for turkey – and since Jennie-O is based in Minnesota, I actually know many of the farmers who raise turkey for the company. Surely a win-win for me. 🙂

And I’m also #winning this week because I found this super fun, super easy turkey burger recipe on the Jennie-O website. It’s not just another turkey burger recipe, though. It’s got the added kick of chili and instead of a bun, a thick slice of garlic bread is used – and did I mention you can shape the patty like a football?

It all adds up to a slightly unexpected way to try turkey burgers, and we loved it at our house!

How are you trying turkey this week?

(Note – I am not compensated to be a part of Jennie-O’s Switch Circle except for the occasional complimentary turkey products to try. Opinions are my own.)

Tailgating Turkey Burgers

Ingredients

  • 1 16-ounce package JENNIE-O® Lean Ground Turkey
  • cup finely chopped cilantro
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt if desired
  • 6 slices garlic toast
  • 1 15-ounce can HORMEL® Chili with Beans, heated according to can directions
  • ¾ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons light sour cream

Instructions

  • Combine turkey, cilantro, garlic, pepper (and salt, if desired) in a large bowl. Mix until combined. Divide meat mixture into six separate ½-inch thick football-shaped patties.
  • Spray non-stick skillet with cooking spray.
  • Place patties in skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Cover and cook for 16-18 minutes, turning two to three times and until internal temperature reaches well-done, 165°F as measured by a meat thermometer.
  • Heat broiler.
  • Place turkey burger on garlic toast.
  • Top with chili and cheese.
  • Broil four to five inches from heat source for two to three minutes or until cheese is melted.
  • Top with sour cream.

Notes

I used the "hot" version of HORMEL® Chili with Beans, but if you don't like that much kick, just purchase the regular version.
For the garlic bread, I bought Market Pantry frozen garlic Texas Toast at Target - it was the perfect size for the patties.
